Legislators who were opposed to the arms sale now approved the sale.
Representative Gregory Meeks of New York, ranking member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, have both approved one of the largest weapons packages ever proposed for Israel. Earlier this year, each of the legislators had opposed the $18 billion arms transfer, which includes 50 fighter jets and Joint Direct Attack Munitions.
Congressman Meeks said that he has been in “close touch” with the White House about the package and “repeatedly urged the administration to continue pushing Israel to make significant and concrete improvements on all fronts when it comes to humanitarian efforts and limiting civilian casualties.”
He stated that he remains supportive of Israel’s right to defend itself against threats from Iran and Hezbollah.
Now that the package has passed the Congressional committees, the proposed sale will now come before Congress for full approval. The weapons sale, which will be delivered in approximately five years, is anticipated to pass since federal legislators have generally been supportive of Israel.
